Shiffrin’s Super-G Comeback Ends in DNF as Robinson Claims Maiden Victory in St. Moritz

American alpine skiing icon Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a disappointing Did Not Finish (DNF) in her long-awaited return to Super-G competition at the FIS World Cup in St. Moritz on Sunday, missing the penultimate gate after a strong early run.

The 30-year-old, competing in her first Super-G since December 2023, started with bib 31 on the challenging Corviglia course—a piste where she has previously triumphed in downhill and Super-G events. Shiffrin appeared composed and competitive, trailing New Zealand’s Alice Robinson by mere milliseconds at intermediate splits and building momentum toward the lower sections.

She handled the demanding Rominger jump flawlessly and was on pace for a potential top-10 result until striding past the second-to-last gate, ending her race prematurely.

New Zealand’s Alice Robinson stole the spotlight with a breakthrough performance, securing her first-ever Worldbitcoin Cup Super-G win in a time of 1:14.18. The giant slalom specialist edged France’s Romane Miradoli by 0.08 seconds, with Italy’s Sofia Goggia taking third at 0.19 seconds back.

Robinson’s victory adds to her dominant season in technical events and narrows the gap to overall leader Shiffrin to just 64 points in the standings.

The race also featured a historic U.S. showdown, marking the first World Cup meeting between Shiffrin and comeback star Lindsey Vonn since 2019. The 41-year-old Vonn, fresh off a downhill win on Friday and second place on Saturday, delivered another solid performance to finish fourth—just 0.27 seconds off the pace—rounding out an impressive weekend.

Shiffrin, a two-time Olympic champion, will now shift focus to her strengths, targeting a fifth straight slalom win—and her fourth of the season—in Courchevel, France, next week.

The World Cup speed events continue with downhill and Super-G races in Val d’Isère later this month, as athletes build toward the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
