American alpine skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin is set to compete in the FIS World Cup event in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on January 3-4, as she aims to maintain her unbeaten streak in slalom this season and regain form in giant slalom.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist currently tops both the overall and slalom standings in the 2025-26 World Cup season, holding a record 106 career victories. Shiffrin, representing Team USA, will seek her sixth straight slalom win of the campaign on Sunday after a hard-fought triumph in Semmering, Austria, where she overcame difficult conditions in the second run to edge out Switzerland’s Camille Rast and Albania’s Lara Colturi.
Shiffrin is still working on consistency in giant slalom following an injury sustained in Killington, Vermont, in November 2024. Her strongest result in the discipline this season remains a fourth place in Tremblant, Canada, with a recent sixth-place finish in Semmering behind winner Julia Scheib of Austria, Rast, and Sweden’s Sara Hector.
The Kranjska Gora venue has delivered varied outcomes for Shiffrin in the past. She claimed her last slalom win there in 2018 but has not finished in slalom since, with did-not-finishes (DNFs) in 2022 and 2024. In contrast, she has enjoyed greater success in giant slalom at the site, securing two wins—including one in 2023—though she placed ninth in her most recent appearance.
