Shiffrin Roars Back! Mikaela Claims First Giant Slalom Podium in 2 Years Ahead of Olympics

In a massive statement just weeks before the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin stormed onto the World Cup giant slalom podium for the first time in two years, finishing third at the final GS race in Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic, on Saturday.

Defending Olympic champion Sara Hector of Sweden held firm to her first-run lead, clocking a winning time of 2:23.86 to edge out American Paula Moltzan by a razor-thin 0.18 seconds for gold. Shiffrin trailed Hector by just 0.23 seconds, securing bronze and sharing the podium with her teammate in a strong U.S. showing.

“It’s always amazing to have a win in the bag, but you have to keep working,” Hector said post-race. “There are so many strong girls out there… super happy to cross first—that’s a really cool feeling.”

For Shiffrin—the 2018 Olympic GS gold medalist and women’s record holder with 22 World Cup GS victories—this breakthrough ends an 11-race drought since her last podium (second place in Jasná, Slovakia, January 2024). The American star has battled back from a serious November 2024 crash at Killington that left her with abdominal injuries and PTSD, making this timely return extra inspiring.

With the Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympic GS on the horizon, Shiffrin is firing on all cylinders. Team USA looks stacked—Moltzan grabbed her third podium of the season, and the momentum is building.

Olympic gold in sight? The slopes are heating up! ❄️🏅 Who’s taking the crown in Milan—Shiffrin, Hector, or a surprise? Drop your takes below! 🚀
