Alpine skiing royalty just got its due! The legendary Ingemar Stenmark—the “Silent Swede” whose technical mastery still echoes through the mountains—has been officially named Hahnenkamm Races Legend of the Year by the Kitzbühel Ski Club.
This honor marks the 50th anniversary of his first victory on the iconic Ganslern slope in Kitzbühel, achieved on January 24, 1976. No one has shaped the history of that demanding slalom course like Stenmark: he claimed an unmatched five slalom wins there (1976, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1983), including a mind-blowing 3.16-second margin in 1982 that remains one of the largest blowouts in World Cup history.
Stenmark’s overall domination is unrivaled in the technical disciplines—86 World Cup wins (46 giant slaloms, 40 slaloms), three overall World Cup titles (1976–1978), two Olympic golds, and five world championship titles. His elegant, precise style redefined the sport, and records like his massive victory margins still stand today.
The announcement came during the prestigious Hahnenkamm weekend in Kitzbühel, with Organizing Committee Chairman Michael Huber calling Stenmark his childhood idol. It’s a perfect tribute to the man who turned the Ganslernhang into his personal playground and left an indelible mark on alpine skiing forever.
From the Streif to the podiums of history—Stenmark’s legacy is timeless. Who’s the greatest technical skier ever? The crown stays with the Swede! 🔥🏔️
