Lindsey Vonn’s Resilient Hospital Update: “Making Progress” After Third Surgery on Shattered Leg – “I’ll Be OK”

    • Lindsey Vonn delivered an inspiring yet grounded health update from her hospital bed on Wednesday, confirming she had undergone a successful third surgery to address the complex tibia fracture sustained in her dramatic crash at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

The 41-year-old American skiing icon, who was airlifted off the Tofane course after tumbling violently just 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run on February 8, shared the news via Instagram alongside poignant photos from her recovery room at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso. In one image, Vonn appears in good spirits, offering a thumbs-up while propped up in bed, her left leg stabilized by a bulky brace and external fixator. Additional shots highlighted the medical hardware and the outpouring of support in the form of flowers and messages.

“I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful,” Vonn wrote. “Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok.”

She expressed deep gratitude to the “incredible medical staff,” her family, friends, and the global wave of support that has flooded in since the incident. The update marks a shift from the immediate shock of the injury—described as stable but requiring multiple procedures—to a cautious optimism about the long road ahead.

The crash, which experts say was unrelated to her pre-existing torn ACL, has effectively ended Vonn’s bid for a storybook Olympic return and is widely viewed as career-ending for the five-time Olympian and record-holding 82-time World Cup winner. Yet her message underscores the same tenacity that defined her career: a refusal to surrender, even as recovery demands patience.

Fans and fellow athletes have rallied around the post, praising Vonn’s strength and vulnerability in sharing the raw realities of elite athletic recovery. As rehabilitation begins in earnest, the skiing community continues to watch closely, inspired by her determination to fight back one step at a time.

Vonn’s team has indicated further updates will follow as her condition evolves, but for now, the focus remains on steady healing amid the global spotlight.
