Mikaela Shiffrin Conquers Fear and Freak ‘Stab Wound’ Injury: Alpine Queen Eyes Olympic Glory in Milano Cortina Comeback

American alpine skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin has opened up about the unexpected mental and physical scars from a terrifying crash that nearly derailed her pursuit of history, revealing how she battled PTSD and a shocking abdominal puncture wound to return stronger for her fourth Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

In November 2024, the most successful World Cup skier of all time—boasting more victories than any alpine athlete in history—was charging toward her milestone 100th World Cup win during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont. Leading after the first run, Shiffrin slipped late in her second descent, struck a gate, somersaulted violently, and slammed into protective netting. The impact caused a deep puncture wound through her abdominal muscles—described by Shiffrin herself as a “stab wound”—along with severe muscle trauma. She admitted the freak injury left her in excruciating pain and bleeding, an outcome she “wouldn’t ever have anticipated from impact or injury.”

The 30-year-old underwent surgery to address complications, including draining a hematoma cavity, and faced months of grueling rehabilitation. Beyond the physical toll, the crash triggered post-traumatic stress, manifesting as hesitation and subconscious fear on the slopes. Shiffrin termed her recovery approach “exposure therapy”: deliberate, repeated training runs that gradually rebuilt her confidence and dismantled the mental barriers.

Now, entering the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, Shiffrin stands as the undisputed dominant force in women’s alpine skiing. She is slated to compete starting February 10 in events including the team combined alongside gold-medal standout Breezy Johnson, stepping into the spotlight after teammate Lindsey Vonn’s devastating leg injury on Sunday sidelined her Olympic campaign.

Despite the setbacks—including earlier injuries like a 2024 MCL sprain and high-ankle issue—Shiffrin has reclaimed her edge, securing her 100th World Cup victory shortly after returning and continuing to rack up wins. Her resilience highlights the psychological demands of elite competition, where overcoming fear can be as challenging as any physical hurdle.

As she chases Olympic redemption following a medal-less 2022 Beijing Games, Shiffrin remains focused and grateful for her support system. Fans worldwide watch eagerly, inspired by the legend who turned a career-threatening moment into proof of unbreakable determination on and off the mountain.
