Nearly a week after a devastating high-speed crash ended her highly anticipated Olympic comeback, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn remains hospitalized in Italy but is expressing cautious optimism about heading home soon.
The 41-year-old American icon, who suffered a complex tibia fracture in her left leg just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill race on February 8, shared an emotional video update from her hospital bed in Treviso on Friday. Vonn thanked fans for the outpouring of support—including flowers, letters, and even a beloved shark pillow she’s using for comfort—while detailing her grueling recovery.
“It’s been quite a hard few days in the hospital here,” Vonn said in the Instagram video. “I’m finally feeling more like myself. I have a long, long way to go. Tomorrow I’ll have another surgery and hopefully that goes well and then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I will need another surgery.”
This upcoming procedure marks at least her fourth surgery since the crash, which occurred when Vonn clipped a gate with her right arm, twisting her body violently and sending her tumbling down the slope. She was airlifted off the course and initially treated in Cortina before being transferred to Treviso’s Ca’ Foncello hospital for specialized orthopedic care.
Vonn emphasized that the injury stemmed from a split-second line error—being just inches too tight—rather than her recent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear sustained in a training crash nine days earlier. Despite the setback, she has shown no regrets about pushing through to compete at the Milan Cortina Games.
The crash not only dashed Vonn’s medal hopes but also impacted another skier earlier in the event, as the same gate contributed to a separate incident—though that athlete escaped serious injury.
Vonn, a three-time Olympic medalist and one of alpine skiing’s all-time greats, has undergone multiple procedures to stabilize the fracture and is described as “very much immobile” while awaiting further imaging to outline her long-term rehabilitation plan.
As she prepares for Saturday’s operation, Vonn’s resilient spirit shines through amid the pain. Fans worldwide continue to rally behind the champion, sending messages of encouragement as she faces an extended road to recovery.
