From Near-Amputation to Warrior Mode: Lindsey Vonn’s Leg Saved – Now the REAL Fight Begins!  Who’s Crying With Her?

Lindsey Vonn, the 41-year-old alpine skiing legend, is channeling unbreakable warrior spirit after a horrifying crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics nearly cost her left leg—and her fans are flooding social media with tears of admiration and support.

The four-time Olympian crashed violently seconds into the women’s downhill on Feb. 8, sustaining a complex tibia fracture (with shattered bone, muscles, nerves, and tendons “in pieces”), a fractured fibular head and tibial plateau, plus a broken right ankle. The trauma triggered severe compartment syndrome—a dangerous buildup of pressure that restricted blood flow and threatened permanent damage or amputation if not addressed urgently.

In a raw Instagram video update on Feb. 23, Vonn revealed how Team USA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett performed an emergency fasciotomy (essentially “filleting” open the leg compartments) to relieve pressure and save her limb. “Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg from being amputated,” she said gratefully, crediting his presence in Italy (originally for her pre-crash torn ACL) as a lifesaver.

After five surgeries, including a six-hour procedure leaving her with “a lot of plates and screws,” Vonn endured low hemoglobin requiring a blood transfusion, intense pain, and two weeks almost completely immobile in a hospital bed. She described the ordeal as “by far the most extreme, painful and challenging I’ve faced in my life, times 100,” and admitted to a “mental battle” with dark days of struggle.

The breakthrough came recently: Vonn was released from the hospital and moved to a hotel, calling it “a huge step!” She’s now wheelchair-bound (due to both legs being non-weight-bearing) but optimistic about transitioning to crutches in a few weeks. Full bone healing is expected to take around a year, after which she’ll decide on removing hardware and addressing her ACL tear with additional surgery.

Amid the physical grind, heartwarming moments—like reuniting with her dog Chance in a touching video—have provided emotional fuel. Vonn is taking it “one day at a time,” inspiring millions with her transparency and grit.

The skiing world and beyond are rallying: Who’s crying with her? The queen of the slopes is proving once again why she’s unbreakable. Prayers, love, and warrior mode activat
