Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is giving fans a raw, unfiltered look at her grueling recovery, sharing shocking footage of an intense gym session where she’s visibly sweating and grimacing through pain—with her surgically repaired leg heavily bandaged, elevated, and braced like it’s still on the edge.
The 41-year-old superstar suffered a devastating crash just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill event at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on February 8. Her right arm hooked a gate, sending her tumbling violently and resulting in a complex tibia fracture, tibial plateau and fibular head breaks, compartment syndrome, and a fractured right ankle. The injuries were so severe that doctors performed emergency fasciotomy—slicing open her leg to relieve pressure—and multiple surgeries (at least five total, including procedures in Italy and the U.S.) to save the limb from amputation.
Vonn, who had already torn her ACL before the Games but pushed through to compete, was airlifted off the course and spent weeks hospitalized before returning home in early March. Now back in the U.S., she’s diving headfirst into rehab, documenting the “hard and painful” process on social media.
In her latest Instagram video from March 5, the three-time Olympic medalist powers through upper body exercises, core work with a medicine ball, and careful attempts to stand and bear weight—flinching visibly as she tests her limits. Sweat drips as she fights for every rep, captioning the post with raw determination: “The only goal is to get healthy. One day at a time. #icandothis.”
This comes just weeks after Vonn revealed the terrifying reality that her leg was nearly lost, crediting Team USA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett for the life-saving intervention amid blood loss requiring transfusions.
Despite the scars that tell a story of survival more than sport, Vonn’s warrior spirit shines through. Fans are rallying behind the icon, calling her progress “incredible” and “beast mode.” While a full return to skiing remains a long road—bone healing could take a year—her early steps from wheelchair to standing are inspiring millions.
Vonn’s journey reminds us why she’s one of the toughest athletes in history: even when the mountain fights back, she refuses to stay down. 💪❄️
Stay tuned for more updates on her recovery. Speedy healing, Lindsey!
