Lindsey Vonn’s Chilling Olympic Nightmare: Doctors Nearly Amputated Her Leg After Devastating Crash

Just over a month after a terrifying high-speed wipeout that ended her 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina in seconds, skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is sharing the raw truth about how close she came to losing her leg forever.

The 41-year-old Olympic gold medalist from Vancouver 2010 was airlifted off the Italian slopes on February 8 after clipping a gate and crashing violently only 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run. What started as a complex tibia fracture quickly escalated into a life-threatening crisis due to compartment syndrome—a dangerous buildup of pressure from bleeding and swelling that threatened to crush muscles, nerves, and tendons in her leg.

Doctors seriously considered amputation as the injury spiraled, but a heroic emergency fasciotomy by Team USA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett “filleted” open her leg to relieve the pressure and saved the limb. Vonn credits him directly: he was on-site only because of her prior ACL tear from a World Cup crash in Switzerland just a week earlier, which she raced through despite the risk.

Vonn underwent multiple surgeries in Italy before returning home to the U.S. for further procedures—including reconstruction of her shattered tibia, fibular head, tibial plateau, and a broken right ankle. She described the ordeal as “the most extreme injury times a thousand,” involving blood loss requiring transfusion and a grueling recovery path.

Now back in rehabilitation, Vonn posted an inspiring Instagram video pedaling cautiously on a stationary bike for just 5 minutes—a small but huge milestone. “Guys…. I’m biking!! Starting with 5 minutes… making progress one day at a time,” she captioned the clip, radiating her trademark grit and relief.

While her competitive skiing future looks dim—she’d be 45 at the 2030 Games in France, and full recovery from such severe fractures and ligament damage could take a year or more—Vonn’s resilience shines through. This latest setback reignites debates about athletes pushing limits, especially after she competed with a freshly torn ACL.

From near-tragedy to tiny triumphs on the bike, Vonn’s journey reminds fans why she’s one of the greatest: unbreakable spirit in the face of unimaginable odds. Fans worldwide are rooting for her continued progress. 💪
