Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is defying the odds and showcasing her legendary resilience just weeks after a terrifying crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics that nearly resulted in the amputation of her left leg.

The 41-year-old American icon suffered a complex tibia fracture, along with breaks to her fibula head and tibial plateau, when she clipped a gate just seconds into her downhill run. The impact caused severe compartment syndrome, a condition that threatened to claim her leg. Emergency fasciotomy surgery, performed by Team USA orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett, saved her limb. Vonn underwent five surgeries in total before being airlifted home and released from the hospital in late February.

Despite the brutal setback — which she has described as “the most extreme injury times a thousand” — Vonn is already making impressive strides in rehabilitation. In a powerful Instagram update on March 21, she shared a video of herself completing her first set of unassisted pull-ups post-surgery. Smiling with determination as she fist-bumped her trainer, Vonn captioned the post: “First set of pull ups post surgery… slowly getting there!”

Additional stories have shown her performing single-leg glute bridges with her injured leg elevated, logging time on the stationary bike just three weeks after her final surgery, and maintaining her “No days off” mentality in daily therapy sessions. She has transitioned from wheelchair to crutches and continues upper-body and core work while protecting the healing leg.

Medical experts involved in her care remain optimistic about her long-term prognosis. While full bone healing is expected to take up to a year, with possible follow-up procedures to remove hardware and address her pre-existing ACL tear, doctors highlight Vonn’s exceptional physical conditioning, mental toughness, and history of bouncing back from major injuries as key factors pointing to a strong recovery ahead.

Vonn has been open about the physical pain and mental challenges of the ordeal, including the haunting memory of the crash and the swarm of paparazzi outside her hospital room in Italy. In her recent Vanity Fair cover story, she spoke candidly about the experience while expressing deep gratitude to her medical team, family, fellow athletes, and fans worldwide for their overwhelming support — including a heartfelt letter from Prince William.

“No regrets,” Vonn has repeatedly stated, emphasizing that she was mentally and physically prepared to compete despite the torn ACL she suffered just days before the Games.

As she continues rehab in the United States, the skiing community and her global fanbase are rallying behind one of the sport’s greatest champions. Vonn has not ruled out future competitive plans, focusing instead on one day at a time and getting healthy.

From a near-tragedy on the Olympic slopes to pull-ups in the gym, Lindsey Vonn’s fight is once again proving why she remains an inspiration to millions.

Keep pushing, Lindsey. The world is cheering your incredible comeback. 💪❤️
