Alpine skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin is proving once again that nothing — not even a leg full of metal hardware — can keep her grounded for long.
In her latest Instagram update, the 31-year-old posted a cheeky message while apparently preparing for or boarding a commercial flight:
“What’s the Point” coming to a flight near you 🫡 thanks United for taking care of me and the hardware 🫶🙏
The post, complete with salute and heart emojis, shows Shiffrin injecting her trademark humor and resilience into the long road to recovery following her catastrophic crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
Shiffrin’s left leg remains heavily reinforced with plates, screws, and other hardware after suffering a complex tibia fracture (including the tibial plateau), fibular head fracture, broken right ankle, and severe compartment syndrome that nearly led to amputation. She underwent multiple emergency surgeries in Italy, including a fasciotomy, before being transferred back to the United States for additional procedures at the Steadman Clinic.
Just weeks ago, she documented her initial journey home from Italy while lying flat in a hospital bed on a private medical flight — a far cry from today’s more “normal” commercial travel. Now, she appears to be navigating airport life and flying with United Airlines, who she publicly thanked for accommodating her and the bulky metal in her leg.
The playful “What’s the Point” reference seems to nod at the absurdity (or perhaps the TSA screening challenges) of traveling with extensive surgical hardware, while also serving as a light-hearted battle cry from a woman who has never let setbacks define her.
Fans flooded the comments with support, laughing at the pun while praising Shiffrin’s positive attitude. Many noted how far she has come since the terrifying 13-second downhill run in Cortina that ended her Olympic dream — from wheelchair-bound to gym sessions with pull-ups on crutches, and now back in the air like any frequent flyer.
Shiffrin has been refreshingly open throughout her recovery, sharing X-rays, rehab updates, and honest reflections. She recently told Vanity Fair she refuses to “close the door” on a potential return to racing, saying her future could include “no kids and want[ing] to race again” in a few years.
For now, every step — or flight — forward is a win. Whether she’s heading to Park City for continued rehab, visiting family, or simply proving she can move through life with her rebuilt leg, Shiffrin continues to inspire with grit wrapped in humor.
United Airlines hasn’t commented publicly on the shoutout, but travelers with medical hardware (and skiing fans everywhere) are surely appreciating the extra care.
The champion who once dominated the World Cup and claimed Olympic gold is still very much in the game — even at cruising altitude.
