Mikaela Shiffrin Reveals Why She’ll Never Cut Carbs Again: “My Brain Feels Like It’s Suffocating”

Olympic skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin has experimented with just about everything in her quest for peak performance — but swearing off carbohydrates is one experiment she won’t be repeating.

In an exclusive interview with TODAY.com, the 29-year-old World Cup champion and multiple Olympic gold medalist opened up about her nutrition journey, admitting she once tried a lower-carb approach only to discover how essential carbs are for both her body and brain.

“I’ve tried less carbs,” Shiffrin revealed. “When you’re really using your body, (carbs) fuel your brain, and they fuel your body.”

The difference, she says, is dramatic and immediate.

On days when she doesn’t get enough carbohydrates, Shiffrin feels the effects fast. “My brain feels like it’s suffocating,” she described vividly. In contrast, when properly fueled, she can push harder and deliver better effort during intense training sessions.

The candid admission highlights the reality of fueling at the highest level of sport. As an athlete who routinely competes in grueling, high-intensity races that demand both explosive power and razor-sharp focus, Shiffrin has learned that carbohydrates are non-negotiable for sustained performance.

She also touched on the broader pressures of elite skiing — the constant travel, stress, and the feeling that she rarely wakes up at 100% — while emphasizing smart fueling as one of the keys to managing it all.

Shiffrin’s honest take serves as a powerful reminder for athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts alike: trendy low-carb or keto diets may work for some, but for those pushing their bodies to the limit, carbs remain the premium fuel for both muscle and mind.

Fans and nutrition experts have praised the skiing legend for her transparency, with many noting how refreshing it is to hear a top athlete debunk one-size-fits-all diet fads.

Whether she’s chasing another World Cup title or preparing for future Olympic glory, one thing is clear: pasta and proper carb-loading will stay on Mikaela Shiffrin’s menu.

The GOAT of women’s skiing continues to prove that true performance comes from listening to your body — even when it’s screaming for carbs. 🍝⛷️
