Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn is proving once again why she’s one of the toughest athletes in sports history — showcasing impressive upper-body strength in the gym more than a month after a horrifying crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics that left her with a complex left tibia fracture and nearly cost her the leg.
In a powerful Instagram update, the 41-year-old posted a video of herself completing six unassisted pull-ups post-surgery, before carefully lowering herself onto a step stool, grabbing her crutches, and celebrating with a fist-bump to her trainer and a cheeky tongue-out moment.
“First set of pull ups post surgery… Slowly getting there!” Vonn captioned the inspiring clip.
The crash occurred dramatically just 13 seconds into her Olympic downhill run when her right arm hooked a gate, sending her tumbling at high speed. She suffered a severe tibia fracture compounded by compartment syndrome, requiring multiple emergency surgeries — including a fasciotomy — with doctors revealing they nearly had to amputate her leg to save her life.
Vonn underwent at least five procedures in total, first in Italy and then back in the United States. She has been candid about the physical and mental challenges, describing “hard times” while emphasizing gratitude and a “one day at a time” mindset.
Despite the setback, her recovery has been remarkably swift in some areas. She has already returned to light biking, core work, and now pull-ups — all while remaining off her injured leg and focused on full mobility.
Fans and fellow athletes, including rival-turned-friend Mikaela Shiffrin, have flooded her posts with support, praising her resilience and warrior mentality.
Vonn, a four-time World Cup overall champion and Olympic gold medalist, has overcome numerous career-threatening injuries before. This latest chapter adds to her legacy of never staying down.
She continues rehab with the clear goal of getting healthy, with no timeline yet for a potential return to skiing. For now, the focus is simple: progress over perfection.
The skiing world is watching — and rooting hard for the comeback queen.
What an incredible display of strength from Lindsey Vonn. Drop a 💪 if you’re inspired by her recovery journey!
