THEY SAID IT WAS OVER… SHE SAID NOT YET

After a shattered leg, near-amputation and multiple surgeries, Lindsey Vonn drops the bombshell: She’s not ready to say goodbye to skiing.

From her hospital bed and now in recovery, the 41-year-old Olympic legend has stunned the sports world by openly entertaining one last run — a potential final comeback that could deliver the closure she craves or risk everything all over again.

In her first major TV interview since the devastating crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Vonn told TODAY’s Craig Melvin:

“I never got a final run. I never got to say goodbye… and that haunts me.”

The crash came just seconds into her Olympic downhill run. Vonn, who had torn her ACL in practice days earlier but still competed, hooked a gate and suffered a brutal fracture to her left leg. Complications including compartment syndrome nearly cost her the limb, requiring multiple surgeries (reports indicate at least four or five) in Italy before she was flown back to the U.S.

Doctors and her family — including her father Alan Kildow, her longtime early coach and vocal “hard ass” critic — urged retirement. Just days after the crash, Kildow told the Associated Press: “She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career. There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.

Yet Vonn, who has built one of the greatest careers in skiing history with 82 World Cup wins, four overall titles, and Olympic downhill gold, refuses to let 13 seconds define her exit. In the April 7 interview and recent Vanity Fair cover story, she admitted she’s “entertaining the idea” of one more race — “much to my family’s dismay.”93a915

“I don’t like to close the door on anything,” she said, adding that the lack of a proper farewell after her strong pre-crash season still eats at her. She’s been open about how her father’s tough, often negative feedback has fueled her throughout her career — and his latest push for retirement may only be adding more fire.

Recovery has been slow and grueling. Vonn has shared glimpses of progress, including unassisted pull-ups in the gym, but she remains on crutches and faces a long road before any serious skiing can be considered. Doctors emphasize caution, and her body — after years of major injuries and comebacks — isn’t ready for high-stakes competition yet.

Still, the queen of speed isn’t shutting the book. Whether it’s one ceremonial final run or something more competitive, Vonn is weighing the unthinkable: returning to the slopes that made her a legend… and nearly ended her.

The skiing world is watching. Fans are divided between awe at her unbreakable spirit and concern for her health. One thing is clear — Lindsey Vonn has never let anyone else write her ending.

Will she risk one last ride for closure? Or will this chapter finally close on her terms?
