“One day at a time”: Olympic legend opens up about the dark mental battle after her horrifying 2026 Olympics crash that nearly cost her leg.

Lindsey Vonn is fighting more than just shattered bones — she’s waging war with her mind.

Just weeks after a terrifying crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina left her with a complex tibia fracture, a broken right ankle, and a leg so damaged doctors nearly had to amputate it, the 41-year-old skiing icon shared a raw and emotional update with fans.

In a heartfelt Instagram video posted on February 25, Vonn captured a touching reunion with her beloved dog Chance. The excited pup jumped up, tail wagging furiously, showering his mom with kisses and hugs as she sat in a reclined chair, smiling through the pain while giving him back scratches.

“Reunited with Chance…. ❤️❣️” she captioned the clip.

But the post quickly turned vulnerable. Vonn admitted she had “a pretty hard day yesterday” where “everything just really hit me hard and I broke down.”

“I know there will be a lot of days like this… the internal mental battle has just begun,” she wrote. “But moments like this help me so much. Just miss my boy Leo… One day at a time.”

Her other dog, Leo, tragically passed away just one day after her crash while she was still hospitalized in Italy.

The emotional low comes after Vonn already revealed the full extent of her nightmare injury: her leg was left “in pieces,” with muscles, nerves, and tendons crushed due to compartment syndrome — a condition where swelling cut off blood flow so severely that amputation was on the table. Dr. Tom Hackett ultimately saved her leg during emergency procedures.

Vonn has undergone five surgeries and previously shared she’ll be wheelchair-bound for a while before transitioning to crutches. On X (formerly Twitter), she described the psychological toll as “dark and hard and unrelenting,” saying the mental battle hit her “like a ton of bricks.”

Yet the four-time World Cup overall champion remains defiant.

“I have always learned from every injury. Each one has made me a better and stronger person,” she posted. “Hard days are coming but I will find a way back to the top of the mountain of life.”

Fans have flooded her with support as she continues rehab back in the U.S., with Vonn emphasizing she’s taking recovery one day — and one small victory — at a time.

Even in her darkest moment, that wagging tail and unconditional love from Chance served as a powerful reminder: the fight isn’t over.
