In a twist that sounds straight out of a Hollywood script, Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn says her devastating crash at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games delivered “good luck and bad luck at the same time” — and she now openly wonders if destiny had a hand in saving her leg from amputation.
Vonn, 41, suffered a horrific high-speed fall just seconds into her women’s downhill run on Feb. 8 in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The impact caused severe trauma, including fractures and compartment syndrome — a dangerous buildup of pressure that threatened to force doctors to amputate her left leg.
Enter Dr. Tom Hackett, the orthopedic surgeon who works with Vonn and Team USA. He performed a critical six-hour fasciotomy, essentially filleting open the leg to relieve pressure and save the limb. “He filleted it open [and] let it breathe, and he saved me,” Vonn said gratefully.
Here’s where fate intervened: Hackett was even in Italy in the first place only because Vonn had torn her ACL in her left knee weeks earlier during a World Cup event in Switzerland on Jan. 30. That earlier injury kept her competing — and kept her trusted doctor on site.
“I definitely think everything happens for a reason,” Vonn shared. “If I hadn’t torn my ACL — which I would have torn anyway with this crash — … Tom wouldn’t have been there. He wouldn’t have been able to save my leg.”
Vonn, one of the most decorated skiers in history, posted a candid video update after leaving the hospital, expressing deep gratitude while processing the surreal chain of events. She described the situation as a bizarre blend of misfortune and fortune that kept her from a far worse outcome.
Fans and fellow athletes have flooded social media with support, many calling the sequence of events nothing short of miraculous. Whether it’s destiny, coincidence, or sheer resilience, Vonn’s story is a powerful reminder of how quickly triumph can turn to trauma — and how one “bad break” can prevent an even bigger disaster.
As Vonn continues her recovery with multiple surgeries ahead, the champion who has defied odds throughout her career is once again proving her unbreakable spirit.
