Olympic skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is showing signs of recovery and resilience just over a week after a terrifying crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics left her with a severe leg injury.
In a heartfelt Instagram post on February 16, 2026, the 41-year-old shared an uplifting video captured by her sister, Karin Kildow. The clip shows Vonn in her hospital room in Treviso, Italy — eating, undergoing physical therapy, and even getting her hair washed and braided. Despite the pain, she’s smiling, laughing, and making playful faces, radiating positivity.
“Thankful for friends, family, my team and all the medical staff that are getting me back to myself,” Vonn wrote. “I’m slowly coming back to life, back to basics and the simple things in life that mean the most. Smile. Laugh. Love.”
The Brutal Crash That Changed Everything
Vonn’s nightmare unfolded on February 8 during the women’s downhill event. Just 13 seconds into her run, she hooked a gate with her right arm, sending her tumbling violently end-over-end at high speed. She lay in agony on the snow as medics rushed to her aid before being airlifted to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed a complex tibia fracture in her left leg — a serious injury involving multiple breaks and soft tissue damage. Vonn has already undergone four surgeries in Italy and is expected to need at least one more upon returning to the United States.
This setback comes on the heels of another recent injury: Vonn had fully ruptured her ACL just weeks before the Olympics but pushed through intense rehab to compete in what she intended to be her farewell Games.
A Champion’s Spirit Shines Through
Even from her hospital bed, Vonn is proving why she’s one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time. She’s been visited by loved ones, including her siblings and actress Mariska Hargitay, and continues to update fans with raw honesty and hope.
While her road to full recovery will be long — involving more procedures and extensive rehabilitation — Vonn’s message is clear: she’s not done fighting.
The skiing world and fans everywhere are rallying behind the icon, inspired by her unbreakable determination both on and off the slopes.
