Lindsey Vonn’s Brutal Truth: “It’s Been a Hard Road” — Olympic Legend Opens Up on Grueling Recovery After Near-Career-Ending Crash

In a candid new interview, skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn pulled back the curtain on her toughest battle yet, admitting “It’s been a hard road” as she continues recovering from a devastating crash at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics that nearly cost her leg.

Just months after her emotional Olympic downhill wreck — which resulted in a complex tibia fracture requiring multiple surgeries — Vonn shared the unfiltered reality of her rehabilitation with CBS Mornings. While optimistic about progress, she didn’t sugarcoat the journey: unexpected additional procedures, isolation, and the daily grind of getting stronger.

“Um it’s been a hard road,” Vonn said. “It’s definitely some surgeries that weren’t expected in the last few weeks that have been pretty difficult but I’m getting there.” Her leg “feels great,” she added, and she’s hitting small but meaningful milestones — like preparing to ditch crutches for short distances.

The reflection comes on the heels of another major win: Vonn’s inclusion in the 2026 TIME100 Sports List, announced just days ago. In her social media post celebrating the honor, she spoke of highs, setbacks, falls, and the courage to keep rising — a theme that perfectly mirrors her current recovery fight.

The crash itself was harrowing. Vonn hooked her arm on a gate, twisting violently and suffering injuries so severe doctors worked desperately to save her leg from amputation. She underwent a six-hour surgery including a fasciotomy and has faced ongoing procedures since returning to the U.S.

Yet true to form, the 41-year-old legend remains focused on the future. She wants to ski again — “regardless if I’m racing” — and continues pushing through physical therapy, including impressive gym sessions like unassisted pull-ups just weeks after surgery.

Vonn’s transparency has struck a chord with fans and fellow athletes. Her story isn’t just about medals anymore — it’s about the raw, often invisible struggle behind the triumphs.

As she slowly transitions off crutches and re-enters public life, Vonn continues to embody the perseverance that made her one of the greatest skiers of all time: four-time World Cup overall champion, Olympic gold medalist, and now, a powerful voice for anyone facing their own “hard road.”

Lindsey Vonn isn’t done writing her story — she’s simply adding the most courageous chapter yet. Her message to everyone chasing dreams through adversity? Keep believing. The comeback is always possible. 💪⛷️

What an inspiring reminder that true champions are forged in the recovery, not just the race.
