Chelsea can overturn a first-leg deficit and book a place in the League Cup final on Tuesday night, setting up a rematch with Liverpool in the 2022 final.

Liverpool could see a repeat of the League Cup final in 2022 if they reach the final, having fallen behind Chelsea in booking a place at Wembley last February. Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea lost 1-0 in the second leg of their semi-final against Middlesbrough but used their home advantage to easily beat their Championship rivals.

Liverpool fans were hoping that Michael Carrick would do well and lead Middlesbrough into the final, but that was not the case. Although the visitors threatened in the opening minutes, Chelsea capitalized on mistakes on the ball to win 6-1 on the night.

This is the biggest second leg win in League Cup semi-final history, equaling Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Crystal Palace in 2001. The Reds then took a step towards the treble as Vladimir Smyker, Igor Biskan, Robbie Fowler and Danny Murphy (2) scored.

The biggest semi-final title went to Manchester City in 2019. Manchester City hammered Burton Albion 10-0 after a surprise 9-0 first leg win. Enzo Fernández and Cole Palmer both scored on Tuesday, the former doubling as man of the match.

Axel Disasi and Noni Madueke also scored, while Jonny Howson was unlucky to score an own goal. Middlesbrough fans were at least given something to celebrate, if only in jest, when Morgan Rodgers scored a consolation goal for the traveling fans in the 88th minute.

This is Chelsea’s 10th appearance in the League Cup final, beating Liverpool for the first time in 13 years. It may soon be the 14th, but Jurgen Klopp’s side will have to struggle to defend their 2-1 lead against Fulham.
