The Pittsburgh Steelers got out of their comfort zone when they decided to hire Arthur Smith to be their next offensive coordinator. Part of hiring an outside candidate that didn’t come up in the organization means you give him the authority to pick and choose his coaching staff. Well, after bringing in his own QB and WR coach, Smith added another assistant on Wednesday, while reshuffling the title of former Steelers QB Coach and interim OC Mike Sullivan. Steelers Hire Matt Baker, Re-title Mike Sullivan Pittsburgh’s newest offensive assistant, Matt Baker, goes way back with Arthur Smith seeing as the…
Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback DeShea Townsend is joining the Detroit Lions organization as their passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Townsend was fired by the Jaguars, but now finds a spot in Detroit, where he will join Antwaan Randle-El on the staff. Townsend, who played 12 seasons for the Steelers from 1998-2009, has coached in the NFL since 2011. The 48-year-old Townsend spent two seasons working with the Jaguars. Before that, he was the secondary coach of the Chicago Bears under Matt Nagy from 2019-21. Townsend also had stops as the New York Giants assistant defensive backs coach in…
While you wouldn’t think wide receiver is an obvious position of need for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they could certainly use some veteran depth behind George Pickens and Diontae Johnson. Plus, let’s face it: Pickens and Johnson are both kind of Jekyll-and-Hyde, so the Steelers could really stand to bring in some more stability at wide out. That’s why Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department thinks signing Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd in free agency would be a swell idea. Boyd has spent his entire career facing Pittsburgh twice a year, but with the Bengals trying to re-sign Tee Higgins and also…
Pittsburgh Steelers fans started their Monday with a cause for concern after viewing Cam Heyward’s Instagram story. The world found out that Heyward underwent some sort of offseason surgery as the star posted from his hospital bed. Well, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, we now know why Heyward went under the knife: Heyward suffered the injury during Week 1 of the 2023 season, undergoing groin surgery and missing over six weeks with rest and rehab before returning. And while his return was notable for the Steelers’ run defense, he wasn’t allocating the typical amount of sacks and pressures Steelers…
The hope for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky when he inked a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 was that he would be able to rebuild his career as a starter. It did not turn out that way for Trubisky. His fate on the team had been written on the wall the moment Pittsburgh selected Kenny Pickett in the first round of that same year’s NFL Draft. It even got to a point where the Steelers instructed Trubisky to send a congratulatory message to Pickett, who eventually got the team’s QB1 role, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post…
This Heartwarming Gesture by Pat Freiermuth Will Surely Make His 2 Parents and Pittsburgh Steelers Fans Proud
Pat Freiermuth is going to be busy this offseason, not just because of football but because he is taking care of some unfinished business. In his latest appearance with The Pocket podcast, the Pittsburgh Steelers tight end shared that he is currently taking classes at Penn State to finish getting his college degree, citing his mother as his main motivation. “I’m actually currently enrolled at Penn State right now, taking classes to finish up getting my degree,” said Freiermuth. “I promised my mom I’d get my degree, so I’m excited to see the smile on her face when I get…
The Pittsburgh Steelers were lucky enough to have a franchise quarterback for 18 seasons. Ben Roethlisberger helped to lead the Steelers to three Super Bowl appearances, two Super Bowl victories, and one of the greatest offensive attacks in NFL history during the 2010s. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Roethlisberger hit a hard decline that resulted in his retirement after the 2021 season. It is very hard to have back-to-back franchise quarterbacks in the NFL, but the Steelers were hoping to find their new leader in 2022. The Steelers opted to wait until after Roethlisberger’s retirement…
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a timeless institution for football fans. They have their way of playing the game and conducting business. Some fans call it old school and find comfort that at least one of their cherished childhood memories has not changed very much. Other fans define it as the Steeler Way and point to the organization’s stability, loyalty, and success in the Super Bowl era as the gold standard in running a professional sports franchise. Steelers’ Roethlisberger Gives Another Controversial Take Tomin and the Steelers rallied to make the playoffs, but Roethlisberger is still making headlines by standing in…
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made two moves to their coaching staff, changing the role of one offensive assistant and hiring an outside candidate. Per the team’s website, the Steelers have officially changed former quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan’s role to senior offensive assistant. After hiring Tom Arth as their new QB coach, Pittsburgh will retain Sullivan but have made his role broader as they keep an experienced coach on their staff. Sullivan had two offensive coordinator interviews outside of the team, meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints, but did not get hired for either job. His relationship…
The conversations about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation won’t stop until there is more clarity regarding what Head Coach Mike Tomlin wants to do at the position in 2024. A re-signing of Mason Rudolph will shut up the crowd talking about the possibility of big names such as Justin Fields and Russell Wilson coming to town. Until then, however, the murmurs will continue. No one is quite sure what the organization has planned for Kenny Pickett’s career, but it seems as if they are going to give him one final chance to prove himself with an offensive coordinator not named…
