When the Green Bay Packers advanced to the divisional round, they decided to bring in defensive coordinator Joe Barry.
As the Packers search for Barry’s replacement, former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley has announced his candidacy. Green Bay is interviewing Staley for its defensive coordinator job, via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman and Dianna Russini.Staley was recently released by the Chargers after a 5-9 campaign.
In his three years at the helm, Los Angeles went just 24-24 and made the playoffs once. Eventually, the Chargers replaced Staley with legendary Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. But despite his unsuccessful head coaching experience, Staley remains a respected figure in the NFL. Prior to joining the Chargers, Staley was the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2020.
The Rams had the best rushing defense in the NFL, allowing 281.9 yards per game.Staley did not have the same success in Los Angeles. That’s because the Chargers defense ranked 28th in the league in 2023, allowing 362.9 YPG. Perhaps focusing more on the defense than the team as a whole could help Staley revive his coaching career.
The Packers finished the 2023 season 17th in the league, allowing 335.1 YPG. After scoring at least 24 points in two playoff games, Matt LaFleur decided to step up to the plate.Brandon Staley is now considered the next possible Packers DC. If he is hired, Green Bay hopes it will be a fresh start for Staley and he can enjoy his time with the Chargers.
