Mauricio Pochettino held showdown talks with Thiago Silva after Chelsea star’s wife called for sacking

Mauricio Pochettino says he has discussed the comments made by Thiago Silva’s wife calling for him to be sacked with the Chelsea player.

Chelsea suffered a humiliating 4-2 defeat at home to Wolves on Sunday, a result that leaves the club 11th in the Premier League and 15 points off the top four.

The team were loudly booed off at half-time and full-time, with many fans calling for Pochettino to be sacked just over half-a-season into his reign at Stamford Bridge.

One such supporter to demand a change in the dugout was Belle Silva, wife of Blues defender Thiago, who tweeted after the match: ‘It’s time to change. If you wait any longer it will be too late.’

Pochettino was quizzed about his future during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup fourth-round clash at Aston Villa

When asked about Belle’s remarks, the manager revealed he had held talks with Thiago over the matter, though would not divulge what was said.

‘He [Thiago] came today to talk to me. I’m not going to talk about what we were talking but the most important thing is that he came and talked to me,’ Pochettino said.

Pressed about how his relationship with the 39-year-old was, he added: ‘It’s good. It’s very good. I think so. From the beginning, you can see my press conferences and how I talk about him.’

Chelsea are in virtually the same situation as they were this time last season when Graham Potter was in the dugout, a predicament few could have imagined given Pochettino’s great reputation and further investment in the squad.

Asked whether the job was harder than he first though, the former Tottenham and PSG boss replied: ‘Of course, it’s always a tough job. But at the same time it is an exciting project and a project that we know is difficult.

‘In this type of moment, we are living in a situation that is not nice, we can learn. It is a good opportunity to learn. I told the players today in the meeting that I trust them more than ever.

‘We really trust the players we have. We are going to face this moment and knowing we can move back and win games.’
