The Cleveland Browns have a history of adding former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks to their roster, and they could look to claim another this offseason with Mitch Trubisky hitting the open market.
Now a free agent, Trubisky is looking to join his fourth NFL team with an opportunity to compete for a backup role outside of the Steelers. ESPN Radio’s Tony Grossi believes that team could be the Browns.
“Mitch Trubisky as a backup potentially,” Grossi said. “First of all Trubisky was highly regarded by the Paul DePodesta and Andrew Berry regime when he came out of the draft. And also there’s the Ken Dorsey link. Trubisky went from Chicago to Buffalo as the backup, with Brian Daboll the coordinator at the time. Dorsey was the quarterbacks coach. I think Trubisky will be the candidate from Ken Dorsey.”
Trubisky is 29 years old and has had success as a backup in other situations. The former second-overall pick could be the replacement for Joe Flacco, who will likely look to compete for a starting job somewhere outside of Cleveland this summer.
If he does land in Cleveland, Trubisky will meet his former team twice this upcoming season but will have to compete with second-year passer Dorion Thompson-Robinson for the No. 2 spot on the roster.
