‘Best runner without the ball in the world’ could help Liverpool beat Manchester City

We have an incredible Premier League title race on our hands and Sunday will see a crucial instalment play out as Liverpool take on Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds currently lead the standings with 63 points from 27 games, but City are just one point behind in second and will go top if they win in Liverpool.

It’s a match of gargantuan proportions. Liverpool will go four points clear of the Citizens should they win, putting them closer to a 20th top-flight title.

In addition, with Jurgen Klopp set to leave Anfield at the end of the season, it would be a step closer to an amazing send-off for the iconic manager.

However, City have history-making designs of their own. They would become the first team in English history to win four top-flight titles in a row should they triumph this term.

Mohamed Salah ‘fine’ for Liverpool ahead of Manchester City clash
Klopp shared some good news this weekend ahead of the match, namely that Mohamed Salah is “fine” after having suffered from a hamstring injury and muscular problems.

Salah missed Liverpool’s Premier League clashes against Bournemouth, Chelsea, Arsenal and Burnley after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he picked up the hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old returned against Brentford, registering a goal and an assist, but then missed games against Luton, Nottingham Forest and Southampton, as well as the Carabao Cup final.

Salah came off the bench against Sparta Prague in midweek and, ahead of the City match, Klopp confirmed that forward was available.

“Mo, there is nothing (wrong with him),” the Liverpool boss told the Reds media team. “He is fine.”

Paul Merson backs Liverpool to beat Manchester City with Mohamed Salah
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson claimed in midweek that Salah would be absolutely crucial to Liverpool’s hopes of getting the better of City.

“I am not saying it’s a one-man team, I just think he needs to play,” he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (06/03/24, 7:10pm).

“I just think he is world-class. He is one of the best players in the world.

“You look a Man City, one of their Achilles heels is going to be down the left with Doku and Ake. I felt Ake fell asleep a couple of times against Man United.

“Salah is the best runner without the ball in the world. I think he will be a threat. I think if Salah plays, I just think they win.

“If he doesn’t, then I am not sure they win the game, but with him playing, then I would be quite shocked if they didn’t win.”

With Salah now seemingly back and raring to go, he could well play a key role in City’s downfall on the day – and potentially, in the title race.
