Jamie Carragher shares whether he could be a surprise candidate to take the Liverpool manager’s job

Liverpool are now just six games away from needing a brand new manager in charge of the team.

The Reds have known now for quite some time that they’re going to have to replace Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

But up until now, that has always felt like a bit of an abstract idea. There’s been plenty of time left to enjoy Klopp and potentially win a trophy or two.

Having crashed out of the Europa League last night though, Liverpool’s full focus is now on trying to send the German manager off with another Premier League title. They’ve got six games to turn around a two-point deficit on Manchester City.

After that, a new era begins at Anfield. Under who? Well, we’re just going to have to wait and see. We know who it isn’t going to be, though. And after Xabi Alonso ruled himself out, another former Liverpool player has stepped forward to do the same.

Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool manager admission
Last night was a genuinely sad reminder of what we’re about to lose at Liverpool. Klopp was spotted approaching the travelling Reds fans and tipping his hat to them after the game.

It was a disappointing end to Liverpool’s European adventures under the manager, but what a ride it has been.

For now though, we have to look to the future. And that’s exactly what Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been doing for Sky Sports. Assessing the Reds potential Klopp replacements, Carragher surprisingly threw his own names into the mix.

“Right, Jamie Carragher, the next Liverpool manager, who’d have thought!” laughed the 46-year-old. “No, I can assure you it won’t be me. I will never come into this conversation ever again.

“I may have come into the conversation when I was coming to the end of my playing days about maybe in the future, if I’d have had a successful managerial career in two or three other jobs then maybe I would be in a position to take the Liverpool job.

“But I chose the easy option, I went down the punditry route. So, I’m analysing football still, I’m still obsessed with the game but I don’t have to worry about the results so much.

“So, there’s absolutely no chance of me being in that conversation and rightly so!”

Who else did Carragher talk about
As well as pretty emphatically ruling himself out, Carragher did name five other potential candidates for the Liverpool job.

Ruben Amorim came out of things the best, with the pundit saying the Sporting boss would be a ‘very good’ appointment for the Reds.

Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery’s chances were also assessed, before Carragher admitted that he’d ‘always’ fancied Thomas Tuchel to follow Klopp at Anfield.

For now, it seems likely that it will be one of those names taking over this summer. But, as we already knew, it won’t be Carragher. We’d still love to see that, though!
