Chelsea’s stance on sacking Mauricio Pochettino after heavy Arsenal defeat

Chelsea’s hierarchy will conduct a review of Mauricio Pochettino’s performance at the end of the season after a section supporters called for the Argentine’s sacking following the 5-0 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a dominant display against their London rivals as two goals from Kai Havertz, a double from Ben White and Leandro Trossard’s early goal sealed the win for the Gunners.

The heavy loss at the Emirates Stadium was Chelsea’s 11th in the Premier League this season and represents a major setback in their hopes of securing European football next season.

Chelsea’s performance was another mark of their inconsistency this term having shown several signs of promise during their 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi final at Wembley just three days ago.

Following the heavy defeat to Arsenal, Pochettino faced renewed calls from some Chelsea supporters to be sacked.

According to MailOnline, reports indicating that Pochettino will remain in charge of Chelsea regardless of how they finish the season are ‘premature’ and that while the players ‘love’ the manager, his performance will be the subject of a full review once the campaign is over.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 5-0 defeat, Rio Ferdinand insists the club’s hierarchy need to give Pochettino another season to improve.

‘I think it will be a crime, really [if Pochettino was sacked], if they have sort of invested and recruited all of these young talents,’ Ferdinand told TNT Sports.

‘The potential they have under the roof is phenomenal. They’ve got a fantastic academy that’s working really well and then to have brought in Mauricio and just give him one season, to integrate all of that at the same time and to still get results at the same time, to expect that he’s almost expecting miracles, I think he [Todd Boehly] needs to give him time.

‘They need to give him that time to really set the foundation for the football club we’ve seen at moments, there’s been ill discipline, etc, the penalty situation, he’s trying to narrow them.

‘Things on the head. He needs time to implement all those things, not just the tactics, but setting the culture and stuff and with so many new players, these things can’t be expected to be achieved overnight.’

Former Chelsea midfielder, Joe Cole, also insisted that is it ‘crucial’ that Pochettino remains as manager at Stamford Bridge.

‘It’s a dangerous game in the current climate, especially a club like Chelsea, where, where the manager, the turnover of management has always been quick,’ Cole said.

‘It’s always been times when you thought managers would be safe, a game was lost, and then there’s been a changeover. So I think it’s crucial that the club back him.

It’s crucial that the club give him the keys in the transfer market, I think not just to bring the players in route, but to also get the players out the door that he thinks have run their race as a Chelsea player.

‘I think they do those two things. I think they’ll be fine. Too many times in football, we see so many managers given jobs. It’s not working on the pitch.

‘I’d like to see the people signing the players and putting their names a little bit of accountability there, you know, because it’s always Mauricio every press conference, win, lose or draw at Chelsea, he talks about how young the squad is and how much time he needs.’
