Pochettino might not like the decision that Chelsea bosses have already made

It’s been a rollercoaster ride at Stamford Bridge for Mauricio Pochettino throughout the 2023/24 season.

After seeing how Todd Boehly went about his business, both in terms of hiring and firing managers and with regards to Chelsea’s transfer spend, it can’t be said that the Argentinian didn’t know what he was getting into.

Regardless, the Blues have struggled for form during much of the campaign, and have rarely hit the heights expected.

Pochettino might be unhappy with recent Chelsea decision
There’s likely to be a multitude of reasons for the same too. For example, the first-team squad have been beset by injuries to key players right across the season.

Further, some of the younger players have taken time to settle, and even the more experienced pros such as Raheem Sterling haven’t had the best of it either.

Ahead of an expected end-of-season review with the likes of Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, the Chelsea hierarchy have made a decision that could well influence how Pochettino views his position for next season.

It isn’t clear at this stage if either party wishes the relationship to continue, though in any event, according to The Telegraph (subscription required), the club will again be ensuring that sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, lead their transfer business across the summer.

Whilst the continental football model appears to be making its way to these shores with more regularity of late, Pochettino is a hands-on manager and would surely prefer to be the person that drives the direction the squad are going in, in terms of transfers.

If he is to stay on as coach, it appears that this will be exactly how he is viewed by the club – as a coach. No more, no less.

With so many youngsters in the squad – decisions made by Winstanley and Stewart – it’s no wonder that Pochettino recently bemoaned the lack of experienced heads, per The Guardian (subscription required).

It appears the status quo will remain the same moving forward, so the upcoming meeting could be full of awkward conversation at best.
