Luis Díaz transfer ‘clause triggered’ after Liverpool’s Champions League confirmation

Liverpool is set to continue paying transfer fee installments for Colombian winger Luis Díaz following his arrival in 2022. The latest payment to Porto was supposedly paid in midweek.

Díaz, 27, arrived at Liverpool in a deal that could reach the value of $54m (€50m/£42m) from the Portuguese side in January 2022 as the Reds looked for additional reinforcements to push the squad over the line and secure the Premier League title. Díaz made an instant impact at Anfield, scoring four goals and adding three assists across his 11 Premier League starts.

Injuries limited his involvement last year, where he failed to beat his tally of 11 starts in the top flight of English football from the previous season. However, he has regained full match fitness during the 2023/24 campaign and now looks back to his best.

A number of his teammates — including Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker — have endured extended periods on the sidelines, but not Díaz. The former Porto man has been one of the mainstays within Jürgen Klopp’s side and has featured in 36 of the 37 fixtures in the Premier League so far.

He has recorded eight goals and added a further five assists across this time, as he continues to justify the money that was spent on his just over two years ago. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the figure Liverpool paid is now set to increase after Díaz triggered a clause in his contract.

The report went on to claim that the Reds paid an initial fee of $49m (£39m/€45m) for the player, which then reached $51m (£40m/€47m) in November when the first clauses were triggered. This figure has now risen even further to the previously noted $54m (€50m/£42m) after he played 45 minutes in the required number of games this season and the club qualified for the Champions League.

Liverpool.com says: Díaz has been a regular in the starting line-up this season, which the Reds have desperately needed. It comes as no shock that he is now attracting the interest of clubs across Europe, as Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain continue to be linked with a move (via Mundo Deportivo) for the player. If Liverpool did choose to sell the winger, Porto would miss out on any further bonuses that were inserted into the deal — such as the $1.1m (€1.0m/£800k) if he reaches 30 goals.
