“That’s young Josh Allen 2.0.”
That’s how New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux described rookie quarterback Drake Maye after Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans. And much of that was due to his heroics in the final moments of regulation.
So on Wednesday, A to Z Sports spoke exclusively with Godchaux about why he made this comparison between Maye and Allen.
“That was crazy. Looked like Josh Allen to me. I’ve been playing against Josh Allen a long time and Drake looked like every spit of Josh Allen, so that’s a good thing,” Godchaux said. “So hopefully we, him can keep building.”
With only four seconds remaining on the clock and the Patriots down by seven, Maye knew that he needed to get the ball in the end zone. As time expired, the rookie quarterback dropped back, running back and forth to avoid the Titans pass rush. It was more than 11 seconds before he floated the ball into the end zone and right to the hands of running back Rhamondre Stevenson.
While he made mistakes during the game, it’s clear that he has certainly impressed during his four starts this season.
He already has 82 completions for 770 passing yards and six passing touchdowns along with 21 carries for 209 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
While a 2-7 record is not what anybody on the team wants right now, it’s clear to Godchaux and others that the future is bright.
“New England definitely has a franchise quarterback,” Godchaux stated.
