The International Ski Federation (FIS) Council convened virtually, implementing pivotal safety measures. Beginning with the 2024/25 season, airbags will be mandatory for athletes competing in Alpine Skiing’s speed disciplines.

FIS Secretary General Michel Vion emphasized, “Athlete safety is non-negotiable.” Establishing the Athlete Health Unit in 2023 demonstrates FIS’s commitment. Vion noted, “We’ll adopt proven measures protecting athletes’ health and welfare.”

    FIS’s safety strategy encompasses:

    1. Weather condition monitoring
    2. Track setup optimization
    3. Cut-resistant undergarments
    4. Smart bindings
    5. Airbags

National Ski Associations may grant airbag exemptions if they restrict athletes’ movement. FIS ensures flexibility while prioritizing safety.

The Council reviewed progress reports from 2025-2029 World Championship hosts and approved technical proposals and jury memberships for upcoming events.

The FIS Council scheduled an additional meeting to address pending matters. Details will follow.

Mandatory airbags signify FIS’s dedication to minimizing injuries. This proactive approach solidifies Alpine Skiing’s commitment to athlete well-being.

Michel Vion’s leadership emphasizes safety, innovation and athlete welfare, shaping Alpine Skiing’s future.
