At 45, She Could Still Dominate: Lindsey Vonn Refuses to Close the Door on Epic Ski Racing Comeback

Olympic skiing icon Lindsey Vonn is keeping the dream alive — even after a brutal crash that nearly ended her career and her leg.

In a candid new interview with CNBC Sport, the 41-year-old legend made it crystal clear: she hasn’t ruled out a return to competitive ski racing. And she’s not stopping there — Vonn openly teased the possibility of one final shot at the 2030 Winter Olympics, when she would be 45 years old.

“I would only do it if I could be fast,” Vonn told CNBC’s Alex Sherman, emphasizing that any comeback would be on her terms — and only if her body can still deliver at the highest level.

The comments come as Vonn continues her grueling recovery from a devastating high-speed crash during the women’s downhill at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. Just 13 seconds into her run, she clipped a gate and suffered a complex left tibia fracture that required multiple surgeries. Doctors worked urgently to save her leg after the terrifying tumble.

Yet the champion’s fire hasn’t dimmed.

In her first major TV interviews since the accident — including with TODAY’s Craig Melvin — Vonn admitted she’s “entertaining” the idea of racing again, much to her family’s dismay. “Ski racing is something I love to do,” she said. “I never got a final run. I never got to say goodbye.”

She added that the abrupt end left her without closure: “It might be fun to do one more — one more run.”

Vonn, who already retired once in 2019 before staging a stunning comeback for 2026, knows the road ahead is long. She’s been documenting her progress on social media — from pull-ups on crutches to intense rehab sessions — showing the same relentless work ethic that made her one of the greatest downhill racers ever.

But she’s keeping perspective. Recovery comes first, one day at a time. She’s focused on walking normally, rebuilding strength, and eventually stepping back into real life beyond the isolation of injury.

Still, the door remains wide open.

Whether it’s one farewell race or a shock bid for 2030 glory, Lindsey Vonn isn’t letting a shattered leg write her final chapter. The queen of speed is healing — and the slopes might not have seen the last of her.

Champions like Vonn don’t fade quietly. They rise again — faster, stronger, and more determined than ever. 💪⛷️
