In a stunning display of skill and determination, Lindsey Vonn, the 40-year-old American skiing superstar, finished fourth in the St. Anton Super-G, despite challenging visibility conditions. This impressive result marked Vonn’s best Alpine Ski World Cup finish since her comeback.
Vonn’s remarkable performance was all the more notable given the difficult conditions she faced. The early starters had to contend with cloud cover, and by the time Vonn made her descent, the darkness had returned. Undaunted, Vonn drew upon her vast experience and expertise to navigate the treacherous course, crossing the line just 1.24 seconds off the pace.
Vonn’s reaction in the finish area was one of stunned delight, as she took in her time and placing. In a post-race interview with Eurosport, Vonn reflected on her run, saying, “It was a crazy run today. It was really bumpy and the light was really flat when I went. It was sunny and then when I was in the starting gate it got dark and I didn’t even have time to change my goggles!”
Despite the challenges she faced, Vonn was thrilled with her result, stating, “I think it was a really good step forwards. In St. Moritz, I was kind of getting into the rhythm and yesterday gave me a lot of confidence. I think I was a little bit more active today but the conditions were not easy. I think I made some pretty big mistakes so to be fourth is something I’m really proud of.”
Vonn also expressed her pride and admiration for her teammate, Lauren Macuga, who claimed her first World Cup win in the same event. “I’m also really proud of my teammate Lauren. It’s really nice to be a part of such a fun team. They’re all so motivated and all have a lot of talent, and it’s great to see another American on top of the podium.”
Looking ahead to her next competition, Vonn expressed her confidence and enthusiasm, saying, “I think I’m in a good place. I really wanted to keep building every day on my results and I think it’s perfect timing coming into Cortina. I feel really confident. My equipment is getting better every day. I just have to get that last 10 or 15 per cent that I know I can get to. I have a lot of confidence in Cortina so I hope I can put everything together there.”
With 12 previous World Cup wins at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Vonn will be aiming to add to her impressive tally next weekend in Italy, with the downhill event on Saturday followed by the Super-G on Sunday.
