In a year marked by outstanding achievements in various sports, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has emerged as the undisputed Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year for 2024. This prestigious honor is a testament to her remarkable accomplishments on the track, where she has consistently pushed the boundaries of human performance.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s impressive resume is replete with records and accolades. At the Summer Olympics in Paris, she shattered her own world record in the 400-meter hurdles not once, but twice, culminating in a breathtaking 50:37 run that earned her the gold medal. This achievement marked the sixth time she has broken the record throughout her illustrious career.

In addition to her individual success, McLaughlin-Levrone also played a crucial role in the women’s 4×400 relay team, helping to secure another gold medal for the United States. Her dominance on the track has left no doubt that she is the fastest woman in the world over 400 meters.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s connection to the state of Kentucky runs deep. During her time at the University of Kentucky, she was an NCAA Champion in 2018, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Her return to her Old Kentucky Home was marked by her induction into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to her outstanding contributions to the sport.

The voting process for the Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year award was highly competitive, with a stellar lineup of nominees. However, McLaughlin-Levrone’s achievements ultimately earned her the top spot, with 40 first-place votes and a total of 1,004 points.

Kentucky baseball coach Nick Mingione finished second in the voting, followed closely by Travis Perry, who won the honor in 2023. Other notable nominees included Kenny McPeek, who made history by becoming the first trainer since 1952 to win the Kentucky Oaks-Kentucky Derby Double, and Olympian fencer Lee Kiefer.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s recognition as the Kentucky Sports Figure of the Year is a significant milestone, marking only the third time a woman has received this honor. Her achievement serves as a powerful inspiration to young athletes and fans alike, demonstrating the rewards of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to one’s craft.

As the sports world looks back on the outstanding achievements of 2024, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s name will be remembered as one of the most dominant forces in athletics. Her legacy continues to grow, and her influence will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come.
