No Vonn-Shiffrin Dream Team at ski worlds, Shiffrin not fit enough

The alpine skiing world was abuzz with excitement at the prospect of a dream team partnership between Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn at the upcoming team combined event at the world championships. However, those hopes were dashed when Shiffrin announced that she wouldn’t be participating in the event, citing her ongoing recovery from an abdominal injury.

Shiffrin, a 29-year-old skiing sensation with 99 World Cup wins and seven world titles to her name, had been sidelined for two months before making her return to World Cup action last week. While she’s making progress, Shiffrin is being cautious and prioritizing her recovery, recognizing that she’s not yet at 100%.

“My team and I are continuing to take it one step at a time as I work to get back to 100%,” Shiffrin explained on social media. “That is proving to be no small task—each day so far has come with a new set of challenges. With that said, I need to keep my energy focused on preparing for the giant slalom and slalom races during world championships, and will not be able to participate in the team combined.”

Lindsey Vonn, who had expressed her enthusiasm for partnering with Shiffrin in the team combined event, was understandably disappointed by the news. Vonn, a 40-year-old skiing legend with 82 World Cup wins, had come out of retirement this season and was looking forward to the opportunity to ski alongside Shiffrin.

“I would love to race with Mikaela, that would be amazing, and I think it would be probably one of the coolest things ever to have both of us competing together on the same team,” Vonn told dpa.

While the dream team partnership between Shiffrin and Vonn won’t come to fruition, Shiffrin is eager to support her teammates and cheer them on to victory. “I am so excited to follow the team combined event and cheer for my teammates—there are so many women skiing fast this year, and plenty of medal potential in the mix! I would have been lucky to get paired with any of my amazing teammates, and I’ll be cheering loud for them in all the coming races!”

As the alpine skiing world championships get underway, fans will be eagerly watching to see how Shiffrin and Vonn perform in their respective events. While the dream team partnership may not have materialized, both skiers are poised to make a significant impact on the competition, and their dedication, passion, and perseverance will undoubtedly inspire fans around the world.
