In a move aimed at bolstering the University of Florida’s football coaching staff, Head Coach Billy Napier has announced the appointment of Deron Wilson as the team’s new defensive backs coach. Wilson’s return to Gainesville, where he previously served as a quality control analyst with the cornerbacks in 2022, marks a significant addition to the Gators’ coaching roster.
Wilson brings a wealth of experience to the table, having spent the past two seasons as the secondary coach at Arkansas. During his tenure with the Razorbacks, Wilson played a pivotal role in transforming the team’s secondary, which ranked fourth in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in passing yards allowed per game in 2023.
Napier expressed his enthusiasm for Wilson’s return, citing his exposure to the team’s system, experience in the SEC, and pedigree in recruiting as key factors in his hiring. “It’s great to have Deron back in the building,” Napier said. “His experience and relationships in recruiting will be valuable assets to our team.”
Wilson’s coaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of developing elite talent and competing for championships. In his own words, “I’m inspired by the culture Coach Napier is building and the standard of excellence players and coaches are held to. I will give it my all to help us compete for championships and sign and develop elite talent.”
Prior to his stint at Arkansas, Wilson served as the defensive coordinator at McNeese, where he oversaw significant improvements in the team’s defensive performance. He also spent four seasons coaching at UTSA, including two as the Roadrunners’ cornerbacks coach.
As a player, Wilson was a standout cornerback at Southern Miss from 2010-2012. His extensive coaching experience, combined with his playing background, makes him an invaluable asset to the University of Florida’s football program.
With Wilson on board, the Gators are poised to strengthen their defensive capabilities and make a push for success in the highly competitive SEC.
