Four words from Mikaela Shiffrin just turned the alpine skiing world upside down.When a fan asked on Instagram if she would race the St. Moritz super-G this weekend — the same races where Lindsey Vonn will make her long-awaited return — Shiffrin replied with a simple, loaded “we’ll see!!”
That’s it. That’s all it took.
In an instant, a dream matchup that once felt impossible suddenly feels very real: Shiffrin vs. Vonn, technical queen against speed legend, on the steep, storied Engadin slopes where both have written history.
Shiffrin has not started a World Cup super-G since December 2023 in Val d’Isère (a race she failed to finish) and has not completed a downhill since January 2023. For two years she has ruled slalom and rebuilt her giant slalom, winning three of the four slaloms held so far this season and twice finishing fourth in GS.
Speed has been off the menu — until, perhaps, maybe, now.
The timing is electric. Vonn, 41, received medical clearance for her comeback last week and immediately entered the two St. Moritz super-Gs scheduled for December 13–14 (the original December 11–12 dates were shifted due to weather forecasts). Shiffrin’s travel itinerary already had her flying to Europe after Tremblant. One cryptic reply later, the ski world is holding its breath.
As of Wednesday evening, Shiffrin’s name does not yet appear on the provisional start list, but World Cup rules allow late entries until 24 hours before the race. Her “we’ll see!!” has left the door wide open.
If she steps into the start gate, it would be the first time the two most decorated female ski racers in U.S. history have faced each other in a speed event since January 2018 in Cortina — seven years ago.
Shiffrin herself seemed to relish the mystery in Canada last weekend. After finishing fourth in Sunday’s giant slalom in Tremblant, she spoke openly about feeling “back in the fight” in technical disciplines but stayed silent on speed plans when pressed by reporters.
Now her four-word Instagram grenade has done the talking for her.
Fans, rivals, and organizers are all reading the same tea leaves. St. Moritz is ready. Vonn is ready. And Mikaela Shiffrin, with a wink and a “we’ll see!!”, just made the entire winter infinitely more interesting.
