After weeks confined to a hospital bed and wheelchair, Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn is embarking on the next stage of her rehabilitation, aiming to progress to crutches as she rebuilds strength following a life-threatening Olympic crash.
The 41-year-old sustained a complex fracture complex in her left leg on February 8 at the Milan Cortina Games, compounded by compartment syndrome that necessitated immediate fasciotomy to prevent amputation. Dr. Tom Hackett’s intervention, including a six-hour reconstruction, stabilized the limb amid plates, screws, and skin grafts.
Now home in Utah after hospital discharge, Vonn is shifting focus to therapy. “Now I will focus on rehab and progressing from a wheelchair to crutches in a few weeks,” she posted. Bone healing is projected at one year before addressing remaining issues like her pre-existing ACL tear.
Vonn’s transition from immobility to mobility symbolizes her warrior ethos, inspiring a global audience as she tackles what she calls her toughest battle yet.
