Olympic skiing icon Lindsey Vonn has given fans an unflinchingly honest glimpse into her ongoing recovery, sharing a raw photo that highlights the physical toll of her recent horror crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
In an Instagram Story posted recently, the 41-year-old champion showed her bandaged and scarred legs resting on an exercise ball during what appears to be a physical therapy session. Her left leg, heavily wrapped in gauze and pads, bears the visible marks of multiple surgeries, while her right leg displays scars from past procedures. The once-powerful limbs that propelled her to Olympic gold and World Cup dominance now appear noticeably thinner due to muscle atrophy from prolonged immobility and hospitalization.
“And just like that… All my muscles are gone 😔,” Vonn captioned the striking image, capturing the frustration and vulnerability of rebuilding after yet another major setback.
The injury stemmed from a high-speed crash during the downhill event in Cortina, Italy, on February 8, 2026. Vonn suffered a complex tibia fracture, along with damage to her fibula head, tibial plateau, and a ruptured ACL. The severity escalated to compartment syndrome, which doctors warned could have led to amputation of her leg. After a lengthy hospital stay involving a fasciotomy, blood transfusion, and multiple surgeries totaling over six hours, she was finally released and returned home to the U.S.
Vonn has since expressed relief at being back in her own bed, cuddling with her dog Chance, but emphasized the “hard and painful journey” ahead. “I’m focused now on therapy and getting healthy,” she shared in a separate post. “It’s going to be a hard and painful journey but I am putting all of my energy into it, like I always do.”
This latest chapter adds to Vonn’s storied history of resilience through injuries, including repeated knee surgeries that contributed to her 2019 retirement from competitive skiing. Yet her determination shines through—she’s channeling the same fierce energy that defined her career into regaining strength and mobility, with a potential full bone healing timeline of up to a year.
Fans and fellow athletes have rallied around Vonn’s candid update, praising her for rejecting the polished social media facade and showing the real, gritty side of athletic recovery. As one of the most decorated alpine skiers in history, Vonn’s vulnerability serves as powerful inspiration: even legends must start from scratch sometimes, but they do so with unbreakable spirit.
