Mikaela Shiffrin’s Confidence Soars: “My Confidence Is Getting Better, Generally I Feel More Comfortable” as She Eyes Olympic Glory—But Skips Downhill Risks

American alpine skiing superstar Mikaela Shiffrin is heading into the 2026 Olympic season with a revitalized mindset and growing self-assurance, even as she strategically opts out of downhill events to protect her body and focus on her strongest disciplines.

In a recent interview, the most decorated skier in World Cup history opened up about her mental and physical progress: “My confidence is getting better, generally I feel more comfortable,” Shiffrin shared with The Associated Press. This renewed sense of ease comes after navigating injuries, including a significant crash in giant slalom training, and the lingering pressures of elite competition—particularly in the lead-up to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

Shiffrin has ruled out downhill racing entirely this season, stating there’s “no chance” she’ll compete in the high-speed discipline. Super-G remains off her early schedule until at least mid-December, allowing her to prioritize technical events like slalom and giant slalom, where she has historically dominated. “If I raced downhill, I wouldn’t even qualify,” she admitted candidly in another discussion, describing the decision as “liberating” since it lets her concentrate on her proven strengths while trusting teammates to handle the speed events.

The shift reflects a smarter, more self-aware approach shaped by past setbacks, including post-traumatic stress from crashes and the emotional weight of expectations. Shiffrin has worked extensively on her mental game, becoming “more comfortable with feeling fear” rather than trying to eliminate it entirely. This maturity has translated into tangible improvements: she feels stronger in training, more accepting of speed in controlled settings, and better equipped to channel nerves into performance.

As the Olympic year unfolds, Shiffrin’s focus remains laser-sharp on reclaiming podium glory in her signature events. Her journey underscores a powerful message—elite athletes evolve not just through wins, but through resilience, smart choices, and honest self-reflection.

With her confidence climbing and distractions minimized, the skiing world is watching: could this be the season Shiffrin adds even more hardware to her legendary resume? One thing’s clear—she’s arriving at the Games more prepared and at peace than ever before. ⛷️
