After facing one of the darkest chapters of his career, Norwegian alpine star Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is back on the slopes—and he’s making it clear that he didn’t get there alone.
In a deeply personal reflection, Kilde revealed how his relationship with fiancée Mikaela Shiffrin became a source of strength through a grueling recovery that once left his future in doubt. “We’ve been a rock for each other,” he shared, describing a partnership built on constant support, resilience, and a shared understanding of the demands of elite sport.
The 33-year-old’s journey back to competition has been anything but straightforward. Following a devastating crash in early 2024, Kilde endured multiple surgeries to repair serious injuries, only to suffer a major setback when a post-surgical infection led to sepsis—forcing him to restart his recovery from scratch.
The physical pain was matched by an intense mental battle.
“It’s been a rollercoaster,” Kilde admitted, recalling months of uncertainty where progress felt slow and, at times, impossible. Instead of focusing on distant goals, he learned to take a step-by-step approach—finding motivation in small victories and staying grounded in what he could control.
Throughout that period, distance often made things harder. With different competition schedules, Kilde and Shiffrin were frequently apart during key moments. He remembered watching helplessly from afar when Shiffrin suffered her own crash, wishing he could be there in person to support her.
Yet, those shared struggles ultimately strengthened their bond.
Now, back competing and eyeing a place at the 2026 Winter Olympics Milano Cortina, Kilde describes his return as “a dream come true.” Even modest results feel meaningful after everything he has endured, serving as proof that perseverance can overcome even the toughest setbacks.
More than anything, the experience has reshaped his perspective.
