Lindsey Vonn is rewriting the rules for female athletes — and she’s not apologizing for it. In a powerful pre-Olympics interview, the skiing legend opened up about her stunning comeback, defying age critics, and why the 2026 Milano Cortina Games in Cortina, Italy, pulled her out of retirement for one final shot at glory.
“I don’t think I would have tried to come back if the Olympics weren’t in Cortina,” Vonn said. “There’s something special about it that always pulls me back… one last time.”
After retiring in 2019 due to years of brutal injuries, Vonn underwent partial knee replacement surgery and shocked the world by returning to competition. She silenced doubters by podiuming again — becoming one of the oldest women to medal in a World Cup event — and set her sights on a fifth Olympics at age 41.
Defying Age and Expectations
Vonn made it clear she’s done with outdated limits on women in sports:
“I bring up age because women don’t normally compete at my age. I think that needs to change. I think the perception of women competing older needs to change.”
Citing legends like Tom Brady and LeBron James who thrived in their 40s, Vonn declared she’s ready to show the world “what a woman at 41 can do.”
She admitted facing harsh criticism when she announced her return — people saying she was too old, it would hurt her legacy, or she shouldn’t even try. But Vonn leaned on unbreakable self-belief:
“Even though what people said about me hurt, it didn’t stop me from believing in my ability… I believe my hard work will pay off.”
Now in what she called possibly the best shape of her life, Vonn targeted the downhill, super-G, and team combined events, chasing a storybook ending in a venue she loves.
Her message resonates far beyond skiing: It’s never too late to chase your dreams, and age is just a number when passion and preparation meet.
Vonn’s journey — from devastating injuries and retirement to Olympic comeback queen — continues to inspire women everywhere to break boxes and rewrite their own limits.
What an absolute legend. 💪
