American alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin has given a candid update on her wedding plans with fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, revealing that the couple is currently putting formal preparations on hold due to their demanding athletic schedules.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the 2026 ESPY Awards in New York City on July 15, the 31-year-old Olympic champion explained that their separate racing calendars make it difficult to prioritize wedding planning right now.
“What I’m realizing is while we’re racing and we’re not together for most of the year, we just need to take the time to be together,” Shiffrin said. “Maybe when at least one of us retires then we can probably get into it. So it might be a little bit of time.”
The pair, who first confirmed their relationship in 2021, announced their engagement in April 2024 with a joyful Instagram post featuring romantic mountain views and Shiffrin proudly displaying her diamond engagement ring.
Shiffrin, who recently claimed gold in the slalom at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, and Kilde, a 33-year-old Norwegian World Cup champion, have long bonded over their shared experiences in elite skiing.
In a 2021 interview with Olympics.com, Kilde highlighted how their common athletic background strengthened their connection. “We’re having an amazing time together,” he said at the time. “What I find really cool is that we can share experiences and have conversations about things I can’t really have with anyone else.”
The couple made a stylish appearance together on the red carpet at the 2026 ESPYs, drawing attention as one of skiing’s power couples.
While fans eagerly await more wedding details, Shiffrin’s latest comments suggest the focus remains on their careers and enjoying quality time as a couple for the foreseeable future.
The story continues to captivate sports enthusiasts following the pair’s inspiring journey both on and off the slopes.
