Lindsey Vonn is once again proving why she’s one of the toughest athletes in sports. Just seven months after a career-threatening crash at the Milano Cortina Olympics left her with a shattered leg that nearly required amputation, the 41-year-old skiing legend has shared a striking new gym photo that has fans calling her progress “insane.”
In the recent Instagram post, Vonn is seen looking strong and focused during a workout session. The image highlights the remarkable strength she’s rebuilt in her surgically repaired left leg, which suffered a complex tibia fracture, tibial plateau injury, and fibular head fracture, along with compartment syndrome, during her downhill run on February 8.
She captioned the post with characteristic determination: “I will never stop moving forward…why would I stop?”
The reaction was immediate. Fans flooded the comments with praise, many noting how extraordinary her recovery appears given the severity of the injuries.
“You’re an incredible inspiration,” one wrote. “I had very similar fractures… Seeing your recovery journey, will and determination has helped me throughout mine.”
Another added: “I had a tibia and fibula fracture one year ago, I know how hard it is, it’s insane that you are doing so well after 6 months.”
Others simply called her a walking example of willpower and resilience.
The crash occurred just 13 seconds into Vonn’s Olympic downhill run after she clipped a gate. She was airlifted off the mountain and underwent multiple surgeries. At one point, doctors performed a fasciotomy to treat compartment syndrome and save her leg. She also broke her right ankle in the same fall and had already been racing with a torn ACL from a World Cup crash weeks earlier.
Vonn has documented her long road back with honesty — from wheelchair and crutches to early upper-body work, then carefully rebuilding lower-body strength without a brace. By June she was posting joyful videos of balance drills, Bulgarian split squats, and pull-ups, writing that being able to actually work out in the gym again made her “so happy and excited I can’t even put it into words.”
Now, seven months on, the latest gym photo shows how far that steady progress has taken her. The same athlete who once said this was “by far the most extreme, painful and challenging” injury of her career is back under the lights of the gym, pushing forward with the same relentless mindset that defined her racing career.
Whether or not a return to competitive skiing is in her future remains an open question — Vonn has said she’s not yet ready to make that decision emotionally. But one thing is already clear: she refuses to stop moving.
And right now, that movement looks stronger than ever.
