Mikaela shiffrin is back on snow in chile. that alone is enough. she did not show up alone.
she is training with u.s. speed teammates breezy johnson and jacqui wiles, and the picture already looks different from a quiet summer camp. this is the american speed group stacking work before the world cup calendar comes back to life.
shiffrin is the most decorated alpine skier in world cup history. johnson is one of the most dangerous downhillers the united states has. wiles has been in the fight for years. put those three on the same hill in august and it stops looking like preparation. it starts looking like a warning.
chile is where a lot of the real winter gets built. the snow is there, the days are long, and there is nowhere to hide if the timing is off. shiffrin has already used this part of the year to sharpen equipment, rebuild rhythm, and turn gym work into actual ski speed. now she is doing it next to the teammates who make the u.s. speed squad look deeper than people like to admit.
nobody is handing out crystal globes in august. that is the point. the teams that look dangerous now are usually the ones still standing in march.
the other nations can watch the clips and call it “just training.” they can also start taking it personally.
