Some athletes represent their country. Some athletes own a red carpet. Mikaela Shiffrin does both in the same calendar year — and makes it look easy.
In Cortina she wrapped herself in the American flag, twirled under the lights, and ended an eight-year Olympic medal drought with slalom gold. Third career Olympic gold. First U.S. skier to win three. The most decorated alpine racer in history, still racing for the United States when she could have coasted on the records she already owns.
Then summer arrived and she switched uniforms.
ESPYs 2026. Gold Retrofête dress. Christian Louboutins. Fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde on her arm. Nominated for Best Athlete in Women’s Sports. On the carpet she talked about her team. Later in the night she and Kilde started juggling a soccer ball — Shiffrin in high heels, still better with the ball than most people in sneakers.
The next night, TIME100 Sports Gala. Off-the-shoulder black dress covered in rhinestones. Same woman who just won Olympic gold looking like she was born for cameras instead of gates.
That is the version of Shiffrin Facebook cannot scroll past.
On snow she is precision, pain, and a flag. Off snow she is sparkle, heels, and a smile that does not apologize for taking up both rooms. Representing her country did not make her smaller. Winning gold did not make her hide. She showed up in couture the same way she shows up in a race suit — fully.
She is still not wedding-planning. She and Kilde get about five weeks a year together. She is already pointing toward another World Cup season because “why I’m still skiing” is a question she answered out loud this summer: she is not done.
So the contrast keeps hitting.
One month she is the face of Team USA on the biggest stage in winter sport. The next she is walking a New York carpet like the night belongs to her.
From representing her country to owning the red carpet, Mikaela Shiffrin can slay both.
The rest of us are just trying to keep up.
