Mikaela Shiffrin just gave fans a rare, unfiltered look at her off-season heart.
The American alpine legend spent last weekend at a wedding that clearly meant more than most. In an Instagram post that quickly made the rounds, she wrote that she had spent the weekend celebrating “the wedding of the first friend I ever had, with the love of his life.” She showed up in full cowgirl mode, looked like she was having the time of her life, and rated the whole thing a perfect 10. “I can only highly recommend it — it was a damn lot of fun,” she said.
The photos and the caption hit hard because they feel so personal. This wasn’t a ski-circuit wedding or a sponsor event. It was someone who has been in her life from the very beginning — the first friend she ever had — now standing at the altar with the person he chose. Shiffrin, 31, looked completely at ease celebrating someone else’s happily-ever-after.
That ease is exactly why the comments exploded.
Shiffrin and Norwegian skier Aleksander Aamodt Kilde have been engaged since April 2024. They are one of the most watched couples in winter sports. Yet they have been open that wedding planning is not happening anytime soon. Their racing calendars barely overlap. Shiffrin has said she only gets about five concentrated weeks a year with her fiancé. The rest of the time they are on different continents, different teams, different World Cup stops. She has made it clear she is not stressed about the delay: she already knows who she wants to spend her life with. They just need more actual time together first.
So when she posted from someone else’s wedding looking that happy, fans did what fans do. They wondered if seeing her oldest friend get married put new ideas in her head. They asked if the cowgirl look was a hint. They wanted to know if “10 out of 10” was also how she feels about the idea of her own wedding someday.
Shiffrin didn’t answer those questions. She just shared the joy of the weekend and moved on. That is very on-brand. She has never been the athlete who over-explains her personal life. She posts the moment, gives it a heartfelt caption, and lets people feel whatever they want to feel.
The contrast is striking. On the mountain she is still the most decorated slalom skier in history, still chasing more records, still training through the southern-hemisphere summer. Off the mountain she is a 31-year-old woman who just spent a weekend dancing at her first friend’s wedding and came away calling it one of the best parties she’s been to.
For now, the only wedding bells ringing are for that childhood friend. Shiffrin and Kilde will keep doing what they have been doing: stealing whatever weeks they can, supporting each other through crashes and comebacks, and waiting until the calendar finally gives them room to plan something of their own.
Until then, she just gave everyone a reminder that even the greatest skier of her generation still lights up when the first friend she ever had finds his person.
And she rated the whole thing a 10.
