The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Penn State Nittany Lions went head-to-head in the semifinal of the College Football Playoff, competing for a trip to the national championship. Penn State previously defeated SMU and Boise State to make it to the semifinals, while Notre Dame took down Indiana and Georgia en route to the Orange Bowl. The Fighting Irish’s win over the Bulldogs took the college football world by storm ahead of the semifinals. Notre Dame defeated Georgia 23-10, dominating the SEC title game winners in the quarterfinal round. Notre Dame looked to be a clear contender to win the national title, but they were halted in the first half of the Orange Bowl. Penn State led the Nittany Lions 10-3 heading into the locker room at halftime. The Fighting Irish struggled on both ends of the field, leaving fans to question the Georgia’s previous double-digit loss.
