Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn is on her way back to American soil, marking a major milestone in her grueling recovery from a horrific Olympic crash.
The 41-year-old icon announced Saturday that her latest procedure—her fourth surgery since the devastating February 8 incident—went smoothly, clearing her for travel from the hospital in Treviso, Italy.
“Surgery went well today! Thankfully I will be able to finally go back to the US!” Vonn posted on Instagram, sharing her relief after nearly a week of intense medical battles following the high-speed wipeout.
Vonn’s nightmare began just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Racing despite a completely torn ACL in her left knee from a pre-Games training crash, she clipped a gate, lost control, and slammed hard into the snow. Screams of agony echoed as she was airlifted off the course for emergency care.
Doctors diagnosed a complex tibia fracture in her left leg, requiring multiple immediate surgeries to stabilize and repair the damage. Specialists have warned of a long, unpredictable road ahead—months before normal walking, with the primary focus on saving the leg and avoiding worst-case outcomes like amputation in severe complications.
Yet Vonn’s spirit remains unbreakable. In her emotional update, she reflected on the risks she knowingly embraced: “The ride was worth the fall… I don’t have regrets and the love I have for skiing remains.”
She encouraged fans to channel concern into inspiration: “Please not sadness or sympathy. I hope instead it gives you strength to keep fighting, because that is what I am doing and that is what I will continue to do. Always.”
Once stateside, Vonn expects further imaging and at least one more surgery to address the fracture fully. She promised more detailed injury updates upon arrival, shifting her focus from the slopes to healing.
The three-time Olympic medalist and all-time great had staged an inspiring comeback after years away, dominating World Cup downhills this season before the Olympics. Now, as she leaves Italy behind, her journey continues on home turf—proving once again why she’s one of sport’s toughest warriors.
Get well soon, Lindsey. The mountains will wait. 🇺🇸
