In a dramatic turn that has gripped the sports world, skiing icon Lindsey Vonn has been released from the hospital following a terrifying injury at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics that nearly cost her left leg.
The 41-year-old American superstar suffered a devastating crash just 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run, fracturing her tibia, fibula head, and tibial plateau. Complications quickly set in with acute compartment syndrome—a dangerous buildup of pressure that threatened to kill muscle, nerves, and tissue, putting amputation on the table.
In an emotional Instagram video update posted from her home after two grueling weeks in hospital, Vonn described the ordeal as “by far the most extreme, painful, and challenging injury I’ve ever faced in my entire life, times a thousand.” She underwent multiple surgeries, including a critical six-hour fasciotomy procedure performed by Team USA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Hackett.
“Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg,” Vonn said tearfully. “He saved my leg from being amputated.” The emergency fasciotomy released the crushing pressure, preventing irreversible damage. Vonn also required a blood transfusion due to significant blood loss and low hemoglobin levels.
The injury came on top of a right ankle break from the same crash, leaving her currently in a wheelchair with neither leg weight-bearing. She had already been dealing with a torn ACL prior to the Games but pushed through to compete in what she called a chance-of-a-lifetime moment.
Now back home in the U.S. and beginning a long road to recovery—estimated at about a year for bone healing alone—Vonn expressed deep gratitude to her medical team. She plans potential future surgery to remove plates and screws once healed.
